Esta expresión como otras muchas, y como muchas acciones que realizamos, entra dentro de ese amplio y subjetivo apartado de lo que se denomina supersticiones.


Si hay alguien que cantó mejor que nadie sobre ellas es Stevie Wonder, en un tema que habla del número 13, de espejos rotos, de años de mala suerte o de cruzar por debajo de escaleras.

1972 fue un año definitivo en la carrera de este genio. Con la salida del disco Talking book, en octubre de ese año, comienza los años de la confirmación de Wonder como artista mundial, con una serie de números 1 consecutivos muy elogiables.

El primer single del álbum fue precisamente Superstition, que se lanzó a la par que aquel. Debuta en el Hot 100 la semana del 18 de noviembre, y pasado el almanaque, en la semana del 27 de enero de 1973 alcanza el número 1, quitando del trono a Carly Simon y You´re so vain.


En la lista de singles R&B también fue número 1, durante tres semanas en este caso, sucediendo en lo más alto a Me and Mrs. Jones, de Billy Paul. Incluso en la Adult Contemporary de la época tiene cierta repercusión (número 38).

Esta circunstancia (1 en el Hot 100 y en la R&B Singles) no ocurría a Wonder desde hacía casi 10 años, con aquel Fingertips de su niñez.

El disco Talking book que lo contiene llegó al 3 de la Top Pop Albums (lo que ahora es Billboard 200).


En UK, el sencillo Superstition rozó el top-10 (número 11)

La importancia de 1972 radica en que Stevie empezó a probar nuevos sonidos, más rockeros en algunos temas, como en el mismo Superstition. Esto, junto a la extensa gira de The Rolling Stones, por Canada y Estados Unidos, en la que el artista ciego actuó de telonero, amplió enormemente su público potencial. En los numerosos conciertos, por cierto, es donde dio a conocer al gran público este Superstition, que después saldría como single del nuevo disco.
